- We seem to be in the midst of a 90’s revival at the moment, with recent acts like Jackson Scott, Soda Eaves, and Summer Flake all drawing influences from the best parts of the slacker era: taking the D.I.Y ethos and lo-fi aesthetics of the 90s into the modern day. This self-titled debut by Melbourne band Flyying Colours suggests the trend is set to continue, with five tracks of dense, psychedelic dream-pop that proves the lo-fi and alternative sounds of the 90s still offer fresh new ground for enterprising bands to explore.

Anyone familiar with the work of Lush, Ride, and My Bloody Valentine will feel right at home with this release, which combines the typical elements of the brighter end of shoegaze with distinctly modern recording practices and a pleasant indie edge: with pop hooks reminiscent of The Pixies and The Cure. Fans of Sydney act The Laurels will also find a lot to enjoy here: with its similar combination of crisp production, and elements of 90’s alt rock.

Flyying Colours, however, hit you harder than The Laurels, with short tracks, thumping drums, and buzzsaw guitar riffs, lending the album its rough and heavy edges: especially compared to The Laurels more meditative allusions to 70’s psychedelic and progressive rock.

The only thing I can criticise about the album is its length: at just under 20 minutes, this 5 track EP serves as a pretty good introduction to the band, but it also ends too quickly, feeling more like a demo tape than a fully-fledged debut. But, that being said, Flyying Colours' first release definitely proves that the band are an act to watch. This self-titled EP represents an intriguing contribution to the growing 90’s indie revival, which seems to be particularly strong in Australia, and is, I hope, a sign of even greater things to come.
