Moshi Moshi / Popfrenzy

- Sheffield youngsters and all round good looking folk-rock-duo Slow Club have been previously and sloppily referred to as the British pop equivalent of the White Stripes, which is seemingly due to fact the band consists of one dude that plays around on gee-tar and one dude-ette whom holds down the beat on the pots and pans- that and they make the songs happen also. Slow Club instead sound more like more varied, minty-fresh, less in-your-face version of The Kills, swapping some of that sass for a hefty does of reflection and a touch of twang. Main vocal contributor Rebecca Taylor swoons and harmonises with herself and combined with small doses of electronics and hand claps, thoughtful percussion and refreshingly restrained guitar hooks these songs sound dense and rich and rarely feel overloaded or un-necessarily over complicated. It would be interesting to see if these 10 songs could be pulled-off to full effect performed in a live environment- just the two of them- though one also wonders if that matters. Produced by Luke Smith of the pretty good, but not great band FOALS, Paradise is a surprisingly adult and at times subtle collection of songs that contain more heart and soul than I would have given Slow Club credit for- a solid sophomore effort from a group that shows a legit amount of maturity beyond their young, handsome, troubled years. You can safely put Slow Club in the, bands that are better than I gave them credit for list of bands that I never gave enough credit to.
